Try Hockey For Free

Try Hockey For Free is a nationwide event led by USA Hockey with the support of the National Hockey League and NHL member clubs. 

Kids, ages 4 to 9, will be provided the opportunity try youth hockey at no cost. Sparta Youth Hockey will have a limited amount of equipment available on a first come first serve basis. All participants are required to have a minimum of a helmet, skates and gloves. If you will need help with equipment, we encourage you to contact us in advance so we can get you more details or get you equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What equipment is required to participate?
Every participant must be wearing a minimum of skates, helmet, and winter gloves.  They are allowed to wear sweatshirts, jackets and snowpants, however, keep in mind they will warm up pretty quick so dress in layers they can remove. 

 

Do we need our own hockey equipment to participate?
Sparta Youth Hockey has loaner equipment on a first come first serve basis, however, you are welcome to bring your own if you have it. 

 

What if there is no rink showing on the map near me? 
This probably means there isn't a participating rink hosting a try hockey event near you.  You can register at the any rink even though there may be a closer rink not hosting a Try Hockey For Free event there. 

 

Do I need a USA Hockey membership to Try Hockey?
No! During THFF registration, you will fill out a waiver for your participant, this will ensure you are covered by USA Hockey for your try hockey event. You will receive more information about a USA Hockey membership after your try hockey event. 

 

What if the participant has no hockey or skating experience?
That's great! We love introducing new players to the sport of hockey. Your athlete will be on the ice with certified coaches and instructors who are there to help players of all abilities and show them how FUN hockey is for everyone. 

 

What if the participant is outside of the 4 to 9 age range?
Sparta Youth Hockey can accomidate participants outside of the 4 to 9 age range, just make sure to register!

 

What if my child gets injured during the event?
It's highly unlikely, however, in the event your child gets injured, all participants who register through the Try Hockey For Free event page are covered by USA Hockey.
